TEA FOR TWO

On January 28, 1966 I have my first date with a man named Eddie. After saying good night and closing my apartment door, I lean against it and say to myself, "I'm going to marry that man." Ten months later, I do.

In 2015 the third coldest February in Detroit’s history keeps me at home. My husband and our life together become my primary focus. Not just what I see but what I feel. What I remember.

Eddie and I so different yet bonded in indescribable ways. The children I longed for that never came but the art that did. Our understandings and misunderstandings. Our silences and sharings. Singing at the piano almost every night. Tea For Two, me for you and you for me. Almost 50 years. For better or worse, in sickness and in health, until death us do part. You are 86. I am 74. Let that parting not be soon.
